Lao government decries library siege as mistake
A Lao government spokesman at a news conference said Saturday's seizure of a library by student demonstrators was a mistake. He stated the students left two days earlier on government orders and Pathet Lao guards were present only to protect property, though youth remained occupying the library and blocking upstairs offices. The USIS building was among five American installations in Vientiane occupied last weekend, with the government still assessing ties to the U.S. Embassy. The AID office closed June 30 with its property transferred to the Laotian government.
