Negotiators announced an agreement to end a 12 week Chicago area trucking strike and lockout. The settlement raises pay near 70 percent, aligning with the national trucking contract ratified in May which granted $1.10 per hour increases over 39 months for 325,000 drivers earning about $4 hourly.
The June unemployment rate slipped to 4.7 percent while 1.3 million more Americans sought work unsuccessfully. Labor Department notes fewer teens and adult women seeking jobs helped the drop, with nonwhite unemployment rising to 8.7 percent and teens remaining unchanged. Total unemployed reached 4.7 million as the civilian labor force grew modestly. Average earnings rose by one cent, offset by higher living costs.
Washington AP The draft lottery ceiling climbs to 195 through August and Curtis W Tarr the draft director says it will not rise much higher. He orders local boards to add only five lottery numbers for August inductions and notes men with numbers around 210 to 240 may avoid service. The White House earlier projected those numbered 240 and above would likely not be drafted while mid range concerns remained.
