Conferees Agree On Compromise To Extend Wartime Powers
Washington AP conferees reached a compromise to extend 48 of President Truman's wartime powers through April 1, 1953. The bill preserves his authority to set troop and defense material transportation priorities and to favor veterans in farm loans and mortgages. It also extends authority to retain Army and Air Force officers on active status until six months after the emergency or until Oct 1, 1953. The powers, used during wartime, technically expired with the Japanese peace treaty ratification.
