Reports from the South indicate a broad walkout affecting over 30 000 shopcraft workers across southeastern rails as unions call a coordinated strike. Reports say the action was orderly with some foremen and helpers joining. maintenance crews largely stayed at work.
The chamber of commerce laid out the Fourth of July program with Mayor J W Hedrick and Dr Dred Peacock as speakers. Elks Band provides music morning and afternoon. athletic contests run 1 to 2 45 with cash prizes. a clown contest is added. Events include a 10:30 ceremony at Elm Street grounds with a citizen naturalization snippet, lunch at noon, races in the Elm Street area, a 4 pm baseball game, a watermelon feast for ex service men, fireworks at 8 pm and a street dance after. Awards announced after contests.
Six Burke county jail inmates escaped after striking jailer J T Bright with a banjo during an attempted breakout. Local authorities pursued the fugitives as of this morning with no arrests reported.
President Harding convened a White House meeting of coal operators and United Mine Workers officials to seek a nationwide settlement of the coal strike. He urged mutual understanding and warned that if a deal cannot be reached with government aid, public interest will be asserted to secure a solution in the nation’s best interests.

Forty men in the Atlantic Coast Line shops at Fayetville went on strike this morning, halting parts of the yard operation and prompting management to seek a quick resolution with the workers.
Three car repairmen at the High Point yards of the Southern railway walked out at 10 am in a strike order. Trains ran on schedule today while officials warned prolonged action could severely affect traffic. Several hundred shopmen and repairers reportedly joined the walkout in Spencer.
Stacy Gamble testified he shot M. C. Spry only as his life was in danger. S.P. Walker supported the claim, saying Spry slipped his hand inside his coat before the shot. Police witnesses recounted Spry’s threats to kill Gamble if 10 years passed.

Fifty trainmen and inspectors went on strike at Grand Central Terminal New York causing congestion as officials posted notices that all trains would face delays. The walkout began at ten o'clock with delays occurring about two hours later after replacements were arranged.
Between 350 and 400 shopmen at the Seaboard Airline of Norfolk Southern responded to a strike call at 10 this morning in Raleigh. The action involved workers from the company shops amid the ongoing labor dispute.

J H Wendler editor of the Florida Post at Winter Park was abducted and flogged then tarred and feathered. He says captors claimed Ku Klux Klan backing but he doubts the group acted. motive linked to an editorial attacking Orlando Mayor Duckworth. He was treated with opiates for severe injuries.
Juries award Mrs. Giles A. Walker full damages after an 18 minute deliberation in JIAMILULE Virginia. The suit sought 10000 for the death of her husband allegedly killed by W H Blankenship during a game of cards. Blankenship is indicted for murder but awaiting trial with case set for July.
Stillwater Oklahoma July 36 Earl Gordon was acquitted by a jury of the murder of Peckman Cobb a fellow student at the agricultural and mechanics college. Gordon testified self defense claiming Cobb attempted to shoot him and the gun misfired.
Federal Prohibition Agent C. L. Cotton rounded up makers in Duplin county. Two Black men were arrested, six barrels of wine destroyed at one location and ten gallons at another. The report notes widespread wine production and demand for any drink with a kick.
Danville Virginia July 30 James Slayton a Callands farmer reported a lightning strike ignited grain stacks igniting a group causing a fast fire that consumed most of his wheat before the thundershower arrived damaging a large portion of the crop and reducing potential yield.
The first 1922 cotton bloom arrived in Wilson on June 29 brought by J. A. Watson. It was grown on his plantation five miles west of town and Watson reports a fair crop with no sign of the boll weevil in the area.
Work has begun razing three adjoining buildings on Main Street to make room for a 50000 dollar Sunday school building to be erected this summer. The parsonage is one of the buildings torn down in Danville Virginia.
Mrs Rebecca Brown Strode wife of former state Senator Aubrey F E Strode was killed when her buggy was struck by an automobile attached to a state convict camp and her horse ran away at Amherst. A small son was thrown free and unharmed.
DANVILLE Virginia July 1 The Tobacco Growers Cooperative Marketing Association has leased another warehouse in town. The Farmers' Auction House, a major local venue, is leased under the standard contract for five years to be used as a delivery warehouse.

Danville on July 1 reports a grand jury to examine the shooting of Robert Benton by Patrolman O T Cook after a frog hunt trip. An $8,000,000 consolidation of manufacturers of automobiles trucks and air parts with factories in seven states has been completed here under the name of the Associated Motor Industries. William L. Warren, a commissioner of Hopewell, Virginia, has been removed from office by an order of Judge Thomas B. Robertson. He is charged with misusing license money and violating Virginia laws on license collections.
