The Associated Press reports at least 75 deaths across 16 states linked to a weekend storm and blizzard. Extreme cold and heavy weather triggered highway crashes fires and heart attacks as travel was paralyzed in major urban areas along the coast.
A Louis Harris survey shows most Americans would back immediate escalation in Vietnam including all out bombing of North Vietnam and higher troop commitments. Winter storm crippled Washington with 16 inches of snow and schools closed nationwide while Ithaca students gained an extra day for exams.
The Raleigh-Durham Weather Bureau warned of a new storm Tuesday afternoon bringing mainly rain to North Carolina with a chance of mountain snow. Temperatures dipped to near zero in the mountains and teens along the coast as Laurel Springs reported two feet of snow and eight foot drifts.
President Johnson framed a renewed peace push while endorsing Pope Paul VI’s weekend appeal. Secretary Rusk detailed a U.S. offer to extend a bombing lull if Hanoi signals willingness to negotiate. Hanoi rebuffed talks as U.S. advisers favored resuming bombing to protect troops and civilians. A separate incident saw U.S. cavalrymen held at gunpoint by Viet Cong and South Vietnamese forces guarding a helicopter.
U S planes strike bridges ferries and warehouses south of Hanoi Haiphong while ground forces push against Viet Cong. Navy pilots claim a bridge east of Dong Hoi and airfield approach damage. one plane shot down. Rescue helicopter saves Lt Cmdr Sylvester Chumley after his A4 Skyhawk goes down near Dong Hoi.
Secretary of State Rusk said the United States offered to extend the bombing pause over North Vietnam if Hanoi showed a peace gesture. He described Hanoi’s response as negative and unyielding and noted no final decision on resuming bombing. Rusk kept negotiations open, saying answers could be found if talks were held.
The Supreme Court agreed to a limited review of James R. Hoffa's 1964 jury tampering conviction. Hoffa seeks reversal after an eight year prison term and $10,000 fine. Co-defendants Thomas Ewing Parks Larry Campbell and Ewing King also win petitions for review on one question each.
Washington leaders reacted to President Johnson's decision to resume air attacks on North Vietnam. Senate figures like Mike Mansfield and J S Fulbright voiced mixed hopes for negotiation and continued action. House Republican Gerald Ford also commented on the shift amid wartime debate.
The Soviet Union launched Luna 9% toward the Moon in an apparent effort to achieve a soft landing with an instrument package. Earlier Luna 8 probes failed to land. the objective is to place down instruments and report back from the Moon’s surface before year’s end.
Washington weighed a long peace offensive against Hanoi with top advisers at Johnson Ranch meetings. A Dec 7 session reexamined options, while a May pause failed to halt North Viet Nam’s aggression. The cease fire plan was superseded by renewed air strikes as U S policy stayed on a security objective for South Viet Nam.
