In New Delhi January 31 Mahatma Gandhi’s youngest son Devadas Gandhi touched off the funeral pyre consuming the martyred leader’s body in the Hindu rite. Tens of thousands wailed and cried Gandhi’s name as Devadas placed live coals above his father’s heart and set alight the sandalwood pile while a Hindu hymn rose to honor India’s prophet of peace killed by an assassin last night.
Washington January 31 The commerce department orders a second monthly cut in oil exports to ease a domestic fuel shortage. A 9.65 million barrel quarterly export quota replaces 11.85 million. original 17 million for the quarter. Steel industry asked to set aside about 10 percent of output for oil well equipment and railroad cars on a voluntary high priority basis.
In DIGNE France January 31 the discovery of 12 bodies in the wreckage of a United States air force transport increased the death toll to 21 in two crashes. Archers recovered three American women five children and four crewmen from the first C 47 wreck near a village in the French Alps. A B 17 flying fortress crashed during a search and one man from its ten crew survived.
