Proof Offered Of Warplane's Durability
Washington January 30 The War Department presented evidence of the P 39 Airacobra durability. Staff Sergeant Paul H Wilkins 20 of Kalispell Montana took off from Hamilton Field California on a high altitude training flight. While inverted at 17000 feet he entered a spin to 6500 feet then recovered. In a recovery dive he partially blacked out. Traveling 400 miles an hour the aircraft struck a telephone pole 20 feet above ground. The propeller cut the cross bar and the left wing sheared off the pole with a deep gash in the wing. Radiator inlets were smashed shut and the propeller bent. Bay doors and nose wheel landing gear were ripped off and engine controls knocked out. He managed to reach 1000 feet then bailed out landing in a primitive area.
