RALEIGH Jan 31 After lengthy debate the house defeated 69 to 38 the Jonas bill to allow superior court judges to impose life sentences in capital felony cases when mercy is urged by the jury. The measure had earlier been tabled but was revived and rejected amid wider fiscal and legislative maneuvering on tax and bridge tolls.
Fannette Rivkin, 43, Bronx beauty operator who offered to testify in the Hauptmann case, was found bound and gagged in a burning room. Rescued by the building superintendent, she was taken to Morrisania hospital and questioned later when able. She murmured she would not testify.
Washington January 31 A representative of the Nation and Social Insurance Herbert Benjamin of New York City was forcibly removed from the House Ways and Means Committee room after vocally denouncing the President and social security legislation. The committee chair warned him his testimony was a tirade and had him escorted from the room by capitol police. He was briefly detained and released.
