Levi Is Often Charged With Equivocal Stances
Atty. Gen. designate Edward H. Levi told the Senate Judiciary Committee he often avoids firm views on issues to protect university neutrality. He said he plans to draft guidelines on wiretapping and FBI surveillance, while caveating that such steps may not be feasible. Ford plan hikes cost with oil tax and tariff delay fight
The administration’s updated figures show average household costs rising toward 275 dollars annually with higher indirect costs from petroleum byproducts. A new oil import tax adds a one dollar levy per barrel starting Friday, plus another dollar in March and April. New England would pay reduced tariffs while other regions face the full amount. Senate leader Hugh Scott warns Ford will veto any debt ceiling bill delaying tariff on imported oil, even as a temporary delay provision advances in the House.
