Welfare Check Pickup Plan Becomes Headache
Nashville officials face a mounting opposition as Tennessee welfare officials push a plan requiring AFDC recipients to personally pick up next month’s checks. The plan, meant to verify eligibility, draws a federal suit, a state legislative challenge, and protests from civil groups. If implemented, recipients must prove residence identity and household size at county offices while officials claim the move will curb AFDC overpayments. Stacy Leigh Lunsford of Roxboro wins North Carolina Junior Miss with Julia Ann Caudle and Teresa Lynn Trice as runners up. Lunsford will compete in Mobile, Alabama.
