Four Allied Sabrejets tangled with twenty Communist MiG-15s twenty miles south of the Suiho Reservoir on the Manchurian border and damaged two Red planes. Ground fighting slowed to a near halt with scattered patrols and light probes along the front.
Charles E Wilson, former General Motors president, formally takes defense secretary post after Senate confirmation by 77 to 6. He resigns GM role and stock holdings valued at millions, promising to serve and strengthen America. Taft predicts quick confirmation for deputy Roger M. Kyes amid stock-divestment pressures on other nominees.
Washington reports President Eisenhower will deliver the State of the Union with a focus on a balanced budget but few specifics. Markets at Smithfield Fair Bluff Clarkton and Forbes Livestock Co Wilson had been closed under quarantine. Four others closed voluntarily in Goldsboro Laurinburg Scotland Neck and Burgaw.

County Building observers report Cedar Waxwings arriving six weeks ahead of their usual early March visit. The birds, gray with yellow-tipped wings and a red tail, fed on Privet berries outside the building though berries were not yet ripe. Warm days recently may have confused their calendar.
Washington reports Sunday’s failed attack on Communist positions on T-Bone Hill prompts Congress to weigh Ike’s options to end the Korean War. Plans center on amphibious and air strikes behind enemy lines, with optional blockade and Chinese theater actions.

Sheriff Fallon cited uncertain death tolls with reports of at least five hospitalized and possible fatalities including a store clerk Miss May Weeks. Fire spread quickly as emergency crews from the Atomic Energy Project and Augusta fought the blaze.
The State Board of Conservation and Development considered a plan to survey inland port sites to create a master plan for port reactivation. The Coastal Marine Council asked approval of the survey funded by a 47 000 legislative appropriation and the matter had been studied by the board’s water resources committee.
