Police say a Tel Aviv judge was abducted by Jewish underground members, the second such seizure in 36 hours. British forces hunt for retired Major H. A. S. Collins abducted in Jerusalem as two sections impose a midmorning curfew and conduct house to house searches.
Royal Dutch Airlines crash near Copenhagen kills American singer Grace Moore and Swedish prince Gustaf Adolf plus 20 others. Plane took off from the Hague bound for Stockholm in good weather but plunged. bodies severely burned. Gustaf Adolf’s death places his infant son Karl Gustaf second in line for the Swedish throne.
In Jerusalem on January 27 two Britons were abducted by the Irgun Zvai Leumi amid renewed tensions. The kidnappings spurred 90 000 Palestine Jews into house arrest and postponed the scheduled hanging of Dov Bela Groner 33 an alleged Irgun member. Lt Gen Sir Evelyn Barker ordered a delay as an appeal to the privy council was pursued by Mrs Helen Friedman of Lancaster Pennsylvania on behalf of Groner’s sister.
Wyndham, a retired army officer, was seized from the courthouse as police conduct a night long search of a mosque-turned cemetery. Witnesses say Collins, director of a Jewish owned bank in Palestine, was chloroformed before being carried off by four men and a woman. Police doubt he hid in the cemetery.
The navy announced the meritorious civilian service award to 33 former Cavite navy yard employees for heroism during Japanese bombing on December 10, 1941. Recipients assisted the wounded, repaired damage, loaded supplies and ordnance, and performed other essential tasks during the attack. John W. Fogleman of Lumberton, North Carolina, is named among the awardees.

Seventeen players used a volleyball as the ball with the Royal Penguins leading 21 to 18 at stoppage. Shellback Seals included Seanman le Charlies F. Prophet of Wadesboro North Carolina.

Pittsburgh reports leaders of the CIO United Steelworkers and U S Steel resume 1947 contract talks while the firm disburses more than 30 million dollars in back pay and 17 million in wage increases. The retroactive payments stem from a 1944 war labor board order to correct wage inequities across six subsidiaries.

A protester named Grace Connally was ejected while Talmadge faced questions about potential paralysis of government as Georgia's treasurer warned of withholding funds until a legal governor is determined.
Senate Republicans led by Bridges push for a minimum 10 percent cut in President Truman's 37.5 billion dollar budget and expect the joint committee to set an expenditure limit at least 19 percent below the president's figure. The week includes likely wartime excise tax extension passage and simmering disputes with Democrats over cuts and refunds.

Delegates noted the work will be long and complex and may include an international court of appeals to aid case definitions and public opinion.
The body of Al Capone lies in a Miami Beach mortuary awaiting funeral plans to be set locally. Attorney Teitelbaum says Capone left no will or money, a villa is mortgaged, and federal officials once valued his fortune at 20 million while he still owed the government. Capone died after a stroke followed by pneumonia at Palm Island villa.
