Army Veterans Eyed To Plug Reserve Shortfall In War
Pentagon officials warn a shrinking peacetime reserve could leave the Army about 250000 men short in early wartime. In a rapid European crisis, planners estimate a need for up to one million soldiers in four months, with about 200000 to replace casualties, but training delays and a three month period before combat limit new draftees and volunteers from filling the gap.

Rome AP reports Italy nears a political crisis after Premier designate Aldo Moro failed to secure a Christian Democrat majority. With Republican Party absent, analysts warn a national vote this spring or summer could bring Communist gains, threatening the postwar balance. The Communist share rose to 27 percent in 1972 and surged to within two points of the Christian Democrats in last June's local and regional polls.
