NASCAR Rule Clash Overshadows Riverside Opening Race
The Riverside 500 mile opener exposed a policy clash as Parnelli Jones was moved from pole to the rear for tire choices. Firestone tires were initially allowed then blocked by NASCAR, later reinstated with Jones starting last yet charging to the lead before a clutch failure sidelined him 25 laps from finish. Cale Yarborough’s Texas injury and Wood Brothers plans for Daytona 500 feature amid a 1970 Grand National schedule expanding to longer, richer races, with only two 150 milers at Hillsborough and Daytona looming ahead.
