Heavy fighting continued near Kuala with reports from that sector on the Central Malayan Railway.

Roxboro January 26 A man identified as Thomas P. Whitfield 45 of Roxboro died of suffocation in a Person County jail cell atop the courthouse. Booked about midnight on drunkenness charges he appeared to have started a small fire with a cigarette and a charred mattress was found after a city policeman smelled smoke around 3 AM.
Big Pike damages at the Southern Cotton Oil Plant in Goldsboro after a Saturday night fire destroyed a cotton finter shed. Mi Westmoreland, plant manager, said the loss is about 16000 and there were no signs of sabotage.
Civilians evacuated from cities in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands as jungle trained Australian militia battled Japanese forces across New Britain and New Ireland. The war spread along a 1,000 mile front from northern New Guinea to Florida Island as mobilization orders expanded. Civilians were moved from Madang Tulagi Lae and Wewak amid aerial attacks while militia from Victoria fought in the hills south of Rabaul. Japanese landings were estimated at 19,000 transports.
A German submarine torpedoed the Varanger off the Atlantic coast 35 miles from the U S shore in pre dawn action. All 42 crew survived after two lifeboats were towed to safety by fishing boats. The ship sank after three torpedoes struck within 12 minutes near South Jersey communities. Norfolk report states Axis undersea raider torpedoed the American ore carrier Venore off the North Carolina coast Friday.
