Hosiery Makers Ask Tariff Help Against Imports
The National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers urged the tariff commission to shield U S mills from rising imports of low cost seamless cotton hose from Japan. Representative Karl Constantine argued a duty based on American selling price is needed to offset Japan's wage advantage and production costs. He noted Japanese 40 hour week wages far below U S rates and cited a surge in Japanese shipments from 271000 to an estimated 2125000 dozen pairs. The testimony highlighted impact on Southern mills and calls for protection to preserve American living standards.
