Palmetto Wildlife Refuge Planned Near N. C. Line

South Carolina and Palmetto sportsmen cheer a proposed 68 000 acre wildlife refuge in Oconee and Pickens Counties to protect small game quail and the new lakes from Duke Power dam projects. The plan reserves 18 000 acres for a big game program and preserves 50 000 acres for hunting with biologists adjusting closures. Lake Jocassee will be formed by a 385 foot dam creating a 310 foot head and 1 143 000 acre feet storage with shores along the Horsepasture River and Toxaway Whitewater streams. Rainbow and smallmouth bass and trout habitats are noted for the North Carolina side and surrounding streams.
