Gusts reach 60 mph while sustained winds measure 35 mph. Weather bureau issues small craft warnings for fresh to strong southerly winds turning west and northwest today and tonight. Northwest and north winds expected Sunday along the North Carolina coast.
H. S. Barnes of New Bern was elected president of the North Carolina Dairy Products Association for the coming year at the annual convention. Vice presidents named include J. B. Webb Jr. of Greenville R. E. Tucker of Charlotte and O. L. Cole of Greensboro with Lloyd Langdon of Raleigh reelected.
Two escapees from a road gang Herbert Wilson and Clyde Conlee were recaptured by officers after a three hour search in the flat swamp area of Pitt County. They were identified as residents of High Point.
Mr and Mrs Francis A Nixon arrived in Raleigh to visit their son Edward C Nixon a student at North Carolina State College They asked police to help locate his residence as the Nixons journey by car to California after the Washington inauguration Chicago Tribune.
A new outbreak of a bread swine disease shuts down sales at most Eastern North Carolina hog markets and closes the Union stockyards and a major Richmond VA meatpacking firm. A temporary quarantine was imposed on the Smithfield North Carolina hog station after ship ments from Smithfield to Richmond carried vesicular exanthema infected animals. State agriculture officials warned it may take a week to ten days to resolve the situation.
Raleigh reports that several legislators are inclined to back a 1951 study commission recommendation to allow appeals from state boards and agencies. They want more time before committing to sponsor proposed legislation in the current General Assembly.
Allied Sabre jets claimed at least four MIG-25s destroyed over Northwest Korea as Capt. Cecil G. Foster and Capt. Dolphin D. Overton III joined the ranks of jet aces with five to nine confirmed kills each. Lt. Harold E. Fisher Jr. added a fifth MIG, boosting the overall tally in the recent fighting. Ground action featured a raid northeast of Porkchop Hill with about 50 Communist casualties and a week total of 2,202 Reds reported by Eighth Army. Navy jets hit a training school at Anbyon while B26s and B29s targeted supply lines near Pyongyang. Fifth Air Force credited extensive enemy and facility losses for Jan. 17-23.
George F. Kennan, leading U.S. Russia expert, appears poised for a diplomatic posting despite policy rifts with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. The possibility arose after Kennan urged easing steps toward liberation of Red satellites, while Dulles urged tougher liberation efforts. Kennan remains technically ambassador to Russia though barred from Moscow, with officials saying his future assignment would not be as prominent.
In Raleigh the General Assembly examined hot rods drunken drivers and voters 18 and older while House and Senate bills flow increased to 90 and 47 respectively. A three member parole board bill passed the House as debate over press access waned with reforms to enforcement of drunken driving and altered cars to curb highway hazards. Graham County Sen J H Crawford proposed a referendum to drop voting age to 18. Other measures include junking hatrods restricting tobacco truck loads exemptions for servicemen and new driver license suspensions. Next week Umstead backed common sense motor vehicle inspection and Fisher outlined plans for uniform traffic courts and stricter enforcement.
The 28th annual North Carolina Newspaper Institute adjourned in Chapel Hill after a morning business session led by W. Randall Harris. Awards honored Jay Jenkins for spot reporting on Klan violence and Chester S. Davis for feature writing. Spencer Murphy won best editorial. Jim Womack claimed top photography honors. Dr Waldo Beach spoke on resisting thought-control and press responsibility.
Charles E. Wilson appeared certain to win Senate confirmation as defense secretary after the Armed Services Committee backed him, while two top nominees faced possible rejection over stock holdings in companies doing business with the Defense Department.
Marines and ground troops hunted Communist guerrillas in a brush covered area after a 12 year old boy alerted police. Lt Scott F Warner directed the operation with Maj W D Olson observing from 50 feet. A Red fired at the helicopter but was killed by Marine fire. Marines named include Warrant Officer Harold T Christian.
Gen James A Van Fleet retires from active duty and hands control of the Eighth Army to Lt Gen Maxwell Taylor who sails to Tokyo then Korea to assume command in February. Van Fleet’s retirement, effective March 31, draws praise from Gen Mark Clark and cements a major U N shift. Syngman Rhee says Korea feels disappointed as Taylor brings Oriental studies and World War II credentials to the post.
The forecast calls for clearing skies and warmer temperatures across the Southeast after yesterday's heavy rains and high winds. A brief tornado threat in West Georgia caused no fatalities but some injuries, while Oklahoma Panhandle dust storms damaged winter wheat. California faced floods and high winds, with Orick in danger. Southwest beaches warmed to the 80s as a new warm spell loomed.
