Republican Chairman Retains GOP Power In RNC

Republican Chairman Hugh D. Scott Jr appears to have strengthened Dewey loyalists grip on the Republican National Committee. He installed a 15 member executive panel and named himself chair of that group, signaling a defiant stance against critics seeking leadership change. Scott refused to resign as national chair or Congressman from Pennsylvania, saying the lineup was not chosen to favor any presidential nominee. The new panel includes Dewey stalwarts J Russel Sprague and Harry Darby, with others backing Taft and Stassen. Talbott reported the party has paid 1948 campaign bills and holds a small surplus plus 500000 in reserve.
