The Pueblo, a U S Navy intelligence auxiliary ship, was boarded by North Korean forces about 25 miles off the North Korean coast in international waters. North Korea said the vessel violated its waters and called it a spy boat. Seoul reported a sixth North Korean assassination team member shot dead as South Korean troops pursued the group. Nine total aboard the Pueblo included six officers, 75 enlisted, and two civilians. The Pueblo radioed that it was in international waters before going off the air.
U.S. forces move thousands of reinforcements into Vietnam's northern zone as Khe Sanh and Huong Hoa face intensified pressure. The 1st Air Cavalry deploys 3,000 helicopter infantry and Marines bolster Khe Sanh, while refugees are moved toward Da Nang. North Vietnamese strength in Quang Tri and Thua Thien is estimated at up to 40,000.

NASA officials led by Dr George Mueller noted the test is a major step toward an early 1969 manned moon flight despite a brief engine shutdown during a critical checkout.
