ECC Withdraws From CC Over Scholarship Limits
East Carolina College announced withdrawal from the Carolinas Conference, effective June 30, after rejecting the conference’s new athletic scholarship caps of 22 football, 10 basketball, and three minor sports. ECC will remain independent while pursuing admission to the Southern Conference. ECC President Dr. Leo Jenkins cited size and future plans, noting ECC has 38 football and 10 basketball scholarships and expects enrollment to reach 6,000 this fall. The move follows ECC joining the NCAA last year and comes as presidents proposed hiring a part time, independent conference commissioner.
