Dutch Soldier From Amsterdam Shines at Makin Atoll Fight
Private Nicholas Johannes Timmens, a 5 foot 2 inch Dutch immigrant in the 27th Division, helped take Makin Atoll in 75 hours. He fought hand to hand with Jap troops, tossed a grenade back, and even napped during a lull, entertaining mates with a mouth organ as bullets flew. Born in Amsterdam 29 years ago, he left his homeland to join Uncle Sam and prove small men can battle as effectively as larger soldiers.
