Elephant spreads family planning message in India
A 2 year old female elephant named Lal Tikon travels about 20 miles a day through rural villages north east of New Delhi to promote birth control. Purchased by 60 donors for 780 dollars, she dispenses contraceptives at subsidized prices and distributes literature while painted signs on her body explain the aim. Local organizers, aided by Ford Foundation and USAID, view the walk as an economical communications tool and say five villagers have volunteered for sterilization since her arrival.
