Ruth returns home to a quiet house and rekindled fire then listens as Sally and her parents reveal tensions. Sally accuses Ruth of vanity over hair, while Mr. Bradley defends Ruth, noting her competence and the era’s pressure to look proper.
In a tense drawing room exchange Ruth defends her carefree mood while her father cautions her. Sally, ready to strike again, launches a sharp barb about Ruth’s appearance, threatening another embarrassment and testing Ruth’s resolve.

The Piave drive by French forces on January 20 began a successful push as Austrians retreated, allowing a northern defense shift away from Monte Monteners toward Calcina Torrent and Monte Spinancia.
