The Lazy Daisy Flower Shop announces the hiring of Mrs. Randall Oleg Farrington Johnson of 704 E Fairfield Road. She serves as treasurer and director of CHARLOTTE-NCNB Corp and brings a decade of horist experience while co operating with her husband in Furniture by Gulf.
Leo E. Ells named vice chancellor for business affairs at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He will oversee a 14 million dollar budget for the 7300 student campus, replacing Louis Moelchert. Ells previously served as vice president for financial affairs at Texas Tech University and held budget roles in the Defense Communications Agency. He is a Berlin New Hampshire native and Maryland alumnus with a Syracuse MBA.
Two former prison mates of Harold George Furr testified he hired them to kill his estranged wife and daughter last year. Furr, 43, from Locust, Stanly County, faces a murder charge in his wife death last September after 21 years of marriage and four children. Witnesses Clontz and Owens said Furr asked them to kill his wife during a jail cell sharing in late 1974 while Furr was jailed for alimony nonpayment. they were released and awaiting safecracking trials.
A small plane crashed shortly after takeoff near Banner Elk injuring three of four aboard. The group, likely from Charleston, returned from Beech Mountain ski area. One walked away. others rushed to Cannon Memorial Hospital. Names to be released. The wreck occurred in a wooded area off old Highway 194 about a mile from Beech Mountain Air Strip.
Detroit AP reports UAW delegates from 700,000 workers focus on job security and enhanced Supplemental Unemployment Benefits as central in upcoming contract talks. A three year blueprint for 650,000 members, with current contracts expiring in September, will be debated after unions study widespread layoffs from a two year recession.
Frank R. West, head of American Beef Packers, was sentenced in federal court to 24 concurrent two year terms after convictions on 32 counts of mail and wire fraud. The firm was fined 100 dollars per count and West placed on two years probation. The judge noted fines would come from creditors, and costs were split between West and the company. West and the firm both face potential appeals.
