About 50 000 fans stood at attention as the honor guard failed to cue at the start of the UCLA Houston matchup. The band played while a television director hushed the crowd and a minute 29 seconds passed before the announcer concluded remarks.
Houston Cougars led by All American Elvin Hayes toppled UCLA 71-69 before a 52,693 crowd, ending UCLA's 47 game winning streak. Hayes scored 39 points, including two free throws with 28 seconds left, as Houston outplayed the Bruins and refused to surrender the lead after halftime.
In a dramatic finish at the Panther-Elon game, 6-10 Jim Picka tapped in a last second basket to beat Elon 92-90 after trailing by 13 late in the second half. Noble Marshall led Elon with 24 points as Picka upset the visitors with the final horn tip-in.
Virginia defeats Clemson 81-73 as Tony Kinn adds 16 points including late rallies. Mike Kates scores 32 for the Cavaliers while Kim hits key long-range shots to push the lead past Clemson’s late pushes.
NC State used a 1-2-2 zone to control East Carolina as Dick Braucher and Vann Williford paced the Wolfpack with 18 points each and 14 by Bill Kretzer. Colbert led ECU with 19 points as State built a 41 23 halftime edge and held on for the win.
High Point welterweight Jerry Anders defeated Greensboro’s Pete Osborne by decision in the Mount Holly AAU Boxing Tournament final. Anders built momentum in rounds two and three after Osborne led in round one, tallying his 28th amateur win to reach 28-2.
