President Eisenhower laid a 6544 billion dollar budget before Congress, slashing 5 1 4 billion from total spending but preserving outlays for atomic energy continental defense and overseas military aid. He warned Fiscal 1955 will end with a deficit near three billion dollars and urged a 25 point tax reform while emphasizing air power in national security.
The Southern Furniture Exposition MarketDates committee announced July 12 22 1954 and January 1955 dates with shorter markets. Doak Finch chairs the committee with Henry Foscue Allan Detweiler Paul Broyhill and W M Bassett. Manufacturers emphasize promotions to aid retailers amid tight consumer demand. Orders remain strong and sampling orders lead the market while on the road selling resumes. Attendance is expected to improve as registration nears end of market period. Some firms fear late large orders may delay deliveries due to warehousing limits.
Arctic air dominated the central states with record lows in Minnesota and North Dakota while the leading edge neared Kentucky and western New York. Snow and rain stretched from Missouri to the Middle Atlantic, with Texas showing wide temperature swings from 8 above in Amarillo to 72 in Brownsville. One death due to exposure reported in Oklahoma City.
In Inchon Korea twenty eight U S Marines were dead or missing after a troopship carrying Chinese POWs collided with and capsized a small landing craft. Six bodies were recovered and 22 more presumed dead at dusk. Survivors described a strong current and a panic moment as the LST moved and the LCM capsized.
The Nautilus, world’s first atomic powered submarine, was launched at Groton Connecticut with Mrs. Eisenhower christening the vessel. Officials hailed it as a milestone for peaceful atomic power and a new era in American sea power.
Wake Forest College disclosed that the late William Neal Reynolds and Mrs. Nancy Reynolds Bagley funded a two million dollar challenge gift conditional on raising an additional three million. Dr. Harold W. Tribble said the gift spurred a strong drive, with the college surpassing the goal by 1954 and plans for a new campus dedication in 1955.
Twenty one American soldiers who refused repatriation from Korea will be issued undesirable discharges by the Army. The action, chosen to avoid legal issues, converts them to civilians under other than honorable conditions while preserving a review path if they return to the United States.
Panmunjom reports say if the Communists do not take back 349 pro Red war prisoners including 21 Americans, Indian guards will open the gates of the neutral zone stockade at midnight Friday and withdraw their forces. Lt. Gen. K S Thimayya says prisoners will be told their owners refuse to reclaim them before the gates are opened.
A Pakistan Mail passenger train collided with a petroleum freight about 75 miles north of Karachi. Officials fear more than 100 dead or injured. foreigners including Americans aboard. Foreign Minister Zafrullah Khan aboard unharmed. rescue train rushed with doctors and supplies. The crash damaged engines and cars with estimates of scarce food and water.
Camp Lejeune Marine William G. Workman 27 died when his car overturned five miles west of Wilmington on U S 76 74. Identification papers showed he hailed from New Jersey and was alone in the vehicle.
President Eisenhower unveils a 1955 defense budget of 937.6 billion with a shift from foot soldiers to air power and modern weapons. The plan lowers overall manpower by about 8.7 percent, trims Army strength by 17.3 percent, and aims to expand aircraft from about 33,000 to 40,000 over three years, with jets comprising more than half.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to enact a broad tax revision expected to reduce revenue about 1.215 billion dollars next year and later by two billion annually. The plan rewrites the tax structure, widens deductions for medical and child care expenses, expands dependents allowances, and cuts corporate taxes, while opposing further general income tax cuts this election year.
President Eisenhower proposed smaller construction appropriations for parkways in the coming year. Blue Ridge Parkway would receive 214000, down from 867300 last year, with funds to cover advance planning and minor upgrades in Linville Falls and Craggy Gardens in North Carolina. Foothills Parkway near the Great Smoky Mountains is set at 8700, above a prior figure of 7, and would fund survey and planning toward eventual inclusion in Great Smoky Mountain Park.
A privately owned Beechcraft twin engined plane crashed into a pine grove near Charlotte Municipal Airport shortly after takeoff. Two of five aboard were slightly injured: W. D. Lovelace the pilot and R. A. Leggett Jr. of Danville Va. Other passengers included R. A. Leggett Sr. J. M. Mitchell and F. E. Trott. Engines caught fire on landing and were brought to Charlotte hospital.
