Snow Hits North Carolina Mountains With Widespread Cold
A winter storm spread from the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys bringing 4 to 5 inch drifts on mountain passes and up to 3 inches elsewhere in North Carolina. Highways remained passable with chains advised, sand and salt used, and winds helping clear roads. Temperatures plunged with Asheville 18, Greensboro 20, Raleigh 26, Charlotte 28, Wilmington 33. Erwin water supply briefly failed due to a likely frozen pipe delaying the Dunn mill impact.
