New York police busted a youth gang led by 21 year old George Leggett after two members exposed plans to rob the Chase Manhattan Bank branch in Kew Gardens Queens for $40,000 to fund a Nazi like camp. Leggett and four teens were arrested. two underage youths were not charged.
In 1944 Burma near the Ledo Road Melvin Blair saved Pvt Paul Rogers under heavy fire earning two Distinguished Service Crosses and a Silver Star. Now Blair, a retired colonel, faces trial in California for alleged attempted theft of $40 000. Rogers family plans to help Blair with travel to the trial and to repay a life owed.

The 66 year old Capt Jesse L Kenworthy, a retired Navy officer linked to Pearl Harbor and the Macon crash, is under psychiatric care in San Jose California after a $5,000 tip to a San Francisco cab driver led to hospital confinement. He told doctors he trusted Dr Walter Rapaport for his care.
Economic pressures push Argentina to seek foreign credits and oil equipment from the Soviet bloc while Brazil Chile and Uruguay move toward closer trade and cultural ties. Khrushchev favors Brazil trade and copper price declines strain Chile. Uruguay hosts a large Soviet embassy and Bolivia, Colombia discuss talks with Moscow.
Secretary Benson said Congress may authorize reduced farm price supports as President Eisenhower seeks 60 to 90 percent parity for basic crops and dairy. Senate questions and Ellender Thye doubts showed resistance. Benson predicted passage of much of the program if a Republican Congress approves, while hearings extended six hours amid interruptions.
Wil liam Wetzel, a New York gunman executed in the gas chamber for a prison slaying, will be buried near Parchman in a small town. Indianola Mayor Tom Pitts said the city will provide a burial plot for the 33 year old, who protested innocence and urged Canterbury to tell the world. His mother, Idea Wetzel of Seneca Falls, N Y, arrived at the prison with Wetzel’s sister after the execution.

Vessel Fire Drake and Moore destroyer escort aided searches while Navy observers noted possible distress signals near Guam as Lt Comdr Wendell K Howard explained missed prior flashes.

Marine brig guard Sgt. Adrian A. McLane testified he used no fists against prisoners in the Sasebo brig case. He denied ordering prisoners to perform a vowel movement or witnessing the alleged bayonet incident. He also said he did not force prisoners to spit at a photo or insult a girlfriend, and claimed Barbuti fostered cruelty charges previously.
