Fires in blast furnaces burn slowly as a 750000 steelworkers strike nears start. Operations curtail. layoffs occur in plants. Truman compromise proposal for wage dispute rejected by Benjamin Fairless after CIO approval.
Pittsburgh January 19 Workers at Jones and Laughlin steel plant join the strike, boosting the count to more than 34000 nationally as deadline nears. Pickets patrol the J and L plant where 9000 are employed while furnaces are banked and the mill down. About 75000 workers idle in the steel fields during a week of stoppages.
The CIO led by Murray insists the 750,000 members will stay off jobs in 1300 steel aluminum and fabricating plants starting Jan 14. White House plans to halt the walkout or seize plants appear unlikely. Apath to averting the strike lies in reconsidering Truman’s 18 cent wage proposal. Fairless is urged to rethink. Jay had originally sought 20 cents but accepted the offer.

Washington January 10 news describes a southern filibuster against the FEPC with continuous sessions proposed to break the deadlock. Senator Morse of Oregon suggests quick naps for sleepy members while Senator Chaves of New Mexico notes supporters will press to keep the chamber in nonstop meetings. Dixie Democrats claim they have enough votes to block any end to the debate as the prolonged session continues.
Senator Walter George of Georgia told the Daily Mail that he doubts supporters will sustain continuous meetings to block the chamber. He said such threats have been made before and are unlikely to break the filibuster.
Sen Eastland says a bloc of about 40 senators oppose cloture while more avoid admitting a two thirds vote is needed. He argues the core issue is whether policy is decided by majority rule or by filibuster, noting many have been elected by a minority due to poll taxes. Continuous-session showdown could shift votes.
Charleston reports two Statesville men died when their sixteen foot boat overturned near Prospect Hill plantation on the Edisto River during a return from a hunting trip. C. W. Barringer 35 drowned after vanishing beneath the water. Dr. C B. Herman physician from Statesville died of a heart attack after reaching shore. General MacArthur outlined an international tribunal plan for the Tojo group charged with crimes against peace and humanity. The charter allows broad evidence rules and upholds fair trial aims while listing crimes including crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Initial trial is scheduled in Tokyo with later sessions possible elsewhere.
In Cheshire Connecticut the bodies of 17 victims burned beyond recognition in an Eastern Air Lines crash were held in mortuaries as a three way investigation by the FBI FAA and airline officials sought the probable cause of the disaster. Eyewitness accounts say the LaGuardia to Boston flight burst into flames about three miles from the crash site in a wooded area.
Southern members formed a 19 man committee from cotton states California and Michigan to press Agriculture Secretary Anderson on the 1946 cotton ceiling. Bowles said the 24.09 cent base is the lowest ceiling to be considered and that ceilings may be higher. Lawmakers warned that continuing price controls could end all price control machinery by June 30.
Greensboro and Winston-Salem emerged as possible sites for the U S Veterans Administration regional office now based in Fayetteville. J S Pittman, regional manager, said attempts to move the office to Charlotte had failed and surveys considered Greensboro Winston-Salem and nearby towns. Charlotte had been named as a relocation site.
Twenty three cars of a north bound Southern Railway freight train derailed four and a half miles south of Greenville causing major damage to the roadbed and rails. All traffic on the double track was detoured while wreckers cleared the scene. No injuries reported and cause of the accident under investigation.
