Santa Barbara January 18 AP A forest fire touched off an oil shale deposit high on the Santa Ynez river headwaters in Santa Barbara National Forest. Smoke rose as a beacon for prospectors and officials monitoring the blaze.

Geologists survey the Santa Ynez shale beds as fires light the surface deposits in the canyon above Gibraltar Dam. Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Dowell appeared in municipal court seeking an out of court settlement for family troubles. Mrs. Dowell accused her husband of abandonment and non support. he pleaded not guilty. The judge found him guilty and sentenced six months on county roads, with a potential suspension if the couple would reunite and comply.
