Sinking vessel transfers passengers as seas calm

Forty nine crew members of the American steamer Macona were lost after striking a rock and foundering off Ni dingen light with only the second mate surviving. Meanwhile the army transport Powhatan reported it was leaking but not in immediate danger as 500 passengers awaited transfer to the Cedric when seas slimmed.
