Carole Lombard Believed Killed In Plane Crash

Von Reichenau Dies Of Apoplexy At 57

Berlin reports Field Marshal General Walter von Reichenau has died of apoplexy at age 57. He led the Northern France campaign, earned promotion to field marshal after that drive, and earlier commanded armies on Poland's southern front. He supervised the Belgian army surrender negotiations. His WWI service included the general staff. he rose from colonel-general in 1939 to major-general by 1934.

Contracts Set For 632 Ships

Washington January 17 The Maritime Commission announced it had negotiated contracts for the construction of 632 additional emergency liberty ships. The new tonnage will help meet President Roosevelt's shipping targets of 8,000,000 deadweight tons this year and 10,000,000 next year. Captain Howard L. Vickery said the 632 vessels costing about 1.11 billion dollars would be completed by the end of 1943. He noted American shipyards would output over 1,900 vessels in 16 years, the greatest shipbuilding drive in history, adding these ships bring total new maritime construction to 18,500,000 tons.

Two Mass Killings Shocks Pierce County Wisconsin

In Pierce county near Ellsworth two mass killings left eleven people dead in 24 hours. Thomas Seipel 31 killed his wife Lucille 29 and their five children then killed himself.
