Gas supplies to rise. Gulf methane fields could fuel nation
Frank Barragan Jr., president of North Carolina Natural Gas Corp., told stockholders that a natural gas shortage should end by next winter and supplies rise in 1978. He cited a vast methane reserve in Gulf of Mexico saltwater deposits beneath Texas and Louisiana as a potential national source for thousands of years. The firm reviewed storage, costs, and Gulf Coast joint-venture wells with 24 successes in 83 drills as of 1976, a ratio better than the national average.

Regulators face conflicts of interest as banks lend to firms and help arrange stock sales while brokers seek fiduciary trust duties.
