Raleigh authorities report no action yet to extradite Dr J W Peacock from Florida. The Florida court deemed him sane, and Governor Morrison would decide extradition, with prison officials seeking arrest warrants from Lakeland and St Petersburg. The case echoes Thaw precedents.
The body of E. C. Gregor a Missouri and North Arkansas striker was found hanging from a bridge near Harrison Arkansas. A coroner's jury is being impaneled to investigate the killing as vigilant crowds continue to search for strikers following yesterday's home search and violence.
French general headquarters report 25,000 Reichswehr concentrated south of Münster near Lüsen, with French and German outposts within eight to ten miles of Dortmund. Reports indicate Dr J W Peacock who escaped the North Carolina state prison is en route to St Petersburg to practice medicine but no word came today. Court records show he was declared sane last Thursday in Arcadia after exams by doctors from Lakeland. The examination aimed to prevent extradition to North Carolina where he killed the chief of police in Thomasville.
Mrs. J W Peacock wife of Dr J W Peacock who escaped from the state prison in Raleigh is reported located in St Petersburg Florida but is living at her home in Thomasville. She has five children two living here one in Greensboro the fourth daughter works there and the fifth studies to be a nurse at Watts hospital in Durham. Mrs Peacock runs a boarding house and was seen in Thomasville today.
Eldridge Tucker of High Point testified he had immoral relations with a prosecuting witness in a case against Carl Agner and Ed Venable of High Point. Judge A M Stack jailed him for contempt and he must post $500 bond to appear at the March term to answer a charge of immoral conduct.
The reparations commission ruled Germany in willful default for 1923 deliveries in kind after Berlin refused coal wood cattle dyes and building materials while French troops remained in the Ruhr. France Belgium and Italy voted in favor with Britain abstaining. President Barthou called the act an open defiance demanding instant action. American representatives Boyden and Logan attended but offered no comment.
Mrs. Margarette Scarlet died last night at 7 30 at the home of her daughter Mrs H P Beck in the Highland cotton mill area. She was 75 and survived by sons R L Scarlet and Sam Scarlet of Thomasville daughters Mrs H P Beck of this city and Mrs Lindsay Bean of Thomasville two brothers and five sisters and 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren Funeral services will be at Clarksbury church tomorrow at 11 o clock with burial in the church cemetery ten miles south of Thomasville.
R E Jordan returned from Milton where he attended the funeral of his mother Mrs Annie Yarborough Jordan who died Friday night after a lingering illness at 70. The funeral was held at Shiloh Baptist Church Sunday at 1 PM. Survivors include Miss Jattie Jordan Raleigh Mrs W T Bryant Mrs W D Fullington and R E Jordan High Point and brothers J Yarborough Milton G B Yarborough Norfolk.
G. B. McCallum of the Charlotte Observer circulation department with Mr. Huff and Mr. Johnson arrived in High Point to inaugurate a subscription drive. They expect to stay several days, secure subscribers, and distribute free copies for about a week.
Judge Al ton Brooks Parker, a Democratic candidate for president in 1904, obtained a license to wed Amelia Campbell of New York City.
A South Main street graded school PTA meeting focused on forming a school library. Principal L R Johnston outlined the proposal, Grady Owens spoke on English needs, Lelia Baker on civics and history references, and Richard Salsbury noted senior class fund-raising through plays. The group backed a stock-book fund to finance the library, with prizes awarded for parent attendance and plans for future incentives.
R. B. Sams reports three Winston-Salem men arrested on liquor charges and two cars seized with whisky. Dan S. Tucker of Winston-Salem had five gallons found in a car but was not arrested. Seagraves Forshee and Deathridge face transport and sale charges with bonds set at 300 and 1000 dollars respectively.
Carl Agner and Ed Venable, both white men from High Point, were found guilty of immoral conduct by a Guilford Superior Court jury this afternoon. Judge A. M. Stack had not yet passed sentence.
The Greensboro YWCA announces the Gate City swimming pool will be closed for repairs until February 1. After February 1 out of town patrons may swim Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and after 5 p.m., with regular hours noted.
Washington January 16 President Harding has been ill with a severe cold for a week. After today’s cabinet meeting he went to the White House to lie down and rest. He spoke briefly to reporters but did not want to answer many questions. His condition is not considered serious.
W N Everett of Richmond County was sworn in as secretary of state by Judge Staney to fill the unexpired term of the late J Bryan Grimes. The oath was given in Raleigh with congratulations from both houses and many friends across the state.
Mrs David Jayne Hill 60 wife of the former ambassador to Germany died from injuries after being struck by a truck driven by Guy Lee a negro who is in police custody. The accident occurred as she stepped from the curb near her home in Washington on January 15.
The New York cotton market opened steady with a slight decline of 2 points on May as Liverpool firmness lifts prices. The south leads selling on a reaction, pushing March to 27.50 and May to 27.65, roughly 12 to 13 points higher. January 27.45, March 27.65, May 27.75, July 27.50, October 29.95 futures listed.

John Guy former cashier of the First National Bank of Statesville pleaded guilty to four counts in federal court on embezzlement charges. The case was continued to the April term. The embezzled amount is alleged at 85000 dollars.
A Tilsit dispatch reports Memel fallen to Lithuanian forces capturing seven Frenchmen and five local policemen, plus three mine throwers and machine guns.
Auction at the Greensboro post office offered the Carolina and Yadkin River railroad line between here and Thomasville for 200 900 upset price but drew no bids. O A Kirkman offered 75 000 stating plans to rehabilitate and operate the line with local manufacturers. Court action pending as receiver L H Hole reports to Guilford Superior Court next Monday.

The will of the late Dr J R Williams who died near High Point was filed for probate in Greensboro. He bequeathed all real and personal property to his widow Eliza J Williams if she remains unmarried, else cash gifts totaling 500 to Belle Worrell and 1000 to the Masonic and Eastern Star home, remainder to Friends Yearly Meeting of North Carolina for church building and repairs in Randolph and Guilford counties. Executors named are Ed L Ragan and D A Davis.
Twelve people were injured after a dynamite and gasoline explosion at a garage in Scott Louisiana last night. Several hundred pounds of dynamite were stored with gasoline and ignited by a lantern, triggering the blast felt in Crowley and Guyden. Lafayette and Rayne fire departments assisted at the scene.
Washington January 16 The census bureau reports December cotton consumption at 527,945 bales of lint and 49.7 percent of lint fibers. It notes November's use was 677,561 bales of lint and 55,122 of linters and December 1921 totaled 510,925 bales of lint and 44,434 of linters.
