Wilt Chamberlain’s 1953 YMCA Tournament Run at High Point
The 1953 National YMCA basketball tournament at the local gym featured eight teams including High Point and Christian Street YMCA of Philadelphia. Wilt Chamberlain, age 16 and 6 11, starred for Christian Street with 33 points per game in early rounds, but High Point and Philadelphia met in the final which Philadelphia won 85 79. The High Point lineup included Don Harthcox, Jack Power, Billy Ray Hunsucker, and guards Fred Swartzberg and Jack Every among others.

More than 200 police formed a chain as about 500 chanting demonstrators confronted Vice President Spiro T. Agnew in Auckland New Zealand.
