U.S. auto sales in early January fell 21.1 percent from a year earlier, with GM Ford Chrysler and American Motors reporting sharp declines for the first 11 days. Production cuts and a looming federal tax increase threaten demand as 160 536 cars were sold, the weakest 10 day period since 1967 models.
A Philadelphia family of eleven perished as a fast moving three story home fire claimed the lives of John Drum 41 and Dolly Drum 39 and seven of their children.
