Show Business Extends Hand To Teens In City
New York show business leaders joined Mayor Wagner in a youth outreach program at a West Side public school. Celebrities including Joey Adams and Louis Armstrong toured the crowd of 500 teens from slums and marked the effort with Spanish and English remarks. Donations from AGVA and the City Labor Council total about 30,000 dollars, with more programs planned across city youth centers. Jackie Robinson urged the youths to see their own worth, saying they are tremendously important.

Khrushchev Accepts Afghan Visit and Port Rankings
AP reports Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev accepted an invitation to visit Afghanistan as part of a broader Asia tour. North Carolina ports show Wilmington handling more cargo than Charleston, with 4.83 million tons versus 4.36 million. Charleston claims larger foreign cargo totals, while intra coastal movements are undercounted. Williams of the Ports Authority notes the discrepancy and that Khrushchev’s stopover could influence future attention to Wilmington and regional trade.

The ads drew over 2,300 responses, including from outside Canada, and featured detailed, framed descriptions of children, some adopted and some with handicaps, as the program aimed to match happiness rather than merchandise.
