Gov Hodges signals reluctance to back a Parsons Brinckerhoff plan for a 10 year highway modernization and a 150 million bond. He cites unanswered financing questions and worries about federal road money while calling for a statewide, centralized Highway Commission.
Secretary of State Dulles and Ambassador Lodge travel to Omaha for a Strategic Air Command briefing with other top diplomats. Raleigh high officials back a long range program to modernize the state primary highway system with a bond issue near 150 million dollars. The American freighter Steelore with a 41 crew aboard reported listing badly in heavy seas 300 miles east of Charleston South Carolina. The Coast Guard from Elizabeth City launched two planes with drops of life saving gear and the Cherokee cutter from Norfolk was dispatched as rescue efforts continued.
New York editors named to AP Managing Editors Association study committees. The group will review Washington news, sports, and Wirephoto while adding new panels on crime farming labor and schools. A committee on new innovations was created.
The Soviet government announced its readiness to share technical experience from operating an industrial atomic power station. A report to the UN Committee on Atomic Energy would be submitted in 1955, with academian Skobeltsyn named as Soviet representative to the conference.
