Clark Says Lewis Insulted Nation in Supreme Court Plea
Attorney General Tom C. Clark argued in Washington that Jonh L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers defied a court order during last fall's coal strike, contending the contempt fines seek only to protect government functions. He warned that no person is above the law as the case tests Norris La Guardia act scope and government power to curb internal threats. Lewis' lawyers countered the act shields unions from injunctions against private employers and that Goldsborough's order was within rights.

1947 North Carolina Budget Highlights Ahead of Session
Raleigh January 14 The 1947 general appropriations bill totals 303 645 647 with anticipated revenue 289 218 500 leaving a 14 427 147 gap funded from surplus. Governor Cherry backs a 20 percent teacher and state employee pay raise and a broad increase in operating funds for all agencies and mental institutions. The plan also expands the states highway program with increased highway commission appropriations and rural road funding. A 44 501 437 permanent building fund and 10 million added to the 20 million reserve would absorb 54 501 437 surplus. The retirement fund would rise four to five percent and franchise and intangible tax rates would be cut about 700 thousand annually. Highway safety staffing would grow the motor vehicles department.
