Spencer Vernon Brown aged 57 of Randleman died Friday night at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fayetteville. The body remains at Cumby Mortuary pending completion of funeral arrangements.

A Durham rent strike involving about 100 public housing tenants prompted a Superior Court order restraining the United Organizations for Community Improvement from advising tenants to withhold rent. Judge C. W. Hall set a Jan. 22 hearing to determine if the restraint becomes permanent. The housing authority seeks damages and the return of funds, while UOCI staff deny involvement and pledge to show their position in court.
