President elect Eisenhower held a five hour secret briefing with 22 GOP leaders and future cabinet members as he gears up for inauguration. Officials said the discussion covered future duties, with plans for swift action once in office.
A joint committee meeting endorsed a plan for a City-County building to house police, an extra courtroom and jail on County property rear of the existing building. High Point funds the initial cost with half reimbursed by the County. first $50,000 payment planned as installments. The full plan awaits votes by City Council on January 20 and County Commissioners on January 22.
United Nations Secretary General Trygve Lie agrees to halt hiring Americans until FBI and Civil Service checks are completed. U N and U S officials plan loyalty reviews for staff, with Lie as final judge. State Dept has identified nine cases needing more information, while 1,681 employees will be checked by the Civil Service Commission and 345 in higher posts will undergo full FBI probes.
In moderate volume the market edged higher with automotives rails and high priced oil issues leading the advance. Chrysler surged 1 4 points to 92 44 as a bellwether while General Motors Stude baker and rail shares gained. New York Central and Union Pacific showed notable moves with several gainers over a point.
The Henderson A strike at Tungsten Mining Corp near here enters its fifth day with no end in sight. The NLRB sent a representative to investigate yesterday and no talks occurred between the company and union. Pickets lined the mine, which employs about 420 workers and produces tungsten for steel hardening.
Cone Mills Proximity workers in Greensboro vote in a three way election to choose representation. December results left the Textile Workers Union of America CIO ousted, with 488 for no union and 400 for the AFL, forcing a runoff.
In Raleigh a 30 year old ex convict pleaded guilty to the Bank of Burgaw robbery taking 1751 dollars with a toy pistol. Judge Don Gilliam sentenced him to five years in prison as Campbell sobbed claiming remorse and previously threatened suicide before trial.
Lowell Besley 43, a former Duke University forestry specialist and Southeast forest experiment station worker, was announced as executive director forester of the American Forestry Association effective July 1. Don P Johnston of Wake Forest disclosed Besley’s $15 000 annual post after the AFA president’s year late confirmation.
A large search party gathered at Beaver Basin Idaho to reach the burned C46 transport wreckage on White Pine Ridge near Fish Haven. Paramedics failed to find survivors after spending a freezing night by the site. Maj Dick Burt and Lt Dan Fitzgerald with medic J J Weis parachuted to the slope and reported the wings buried in deep snow.

High Point Mayors aide questions need for separate city committee while Forsyth and Winston Salem back the plan. A joint session with Guilford County officials and Winston Salem and High Point could occur January 26 to discuss a dam site on the Yadkin River.
The Republican majority finished GOP senatorial committee assignments as Taft plans Senate ratification later today. Democrats settled their panels in a steering session with freshmen given major posts and MeCarthy to head the Senate Government Operations Committee. The minority lineup includes McClellan Hoey Humphrey Jackson Kennedy and Symington to balance investigations.
United Nations fighter-bombers attacked the Manchuria to Korea supply line with two 220-plane efforts north of Inanju and between Sinanju and the Yalu River. Sabre jets shot down two MiG-15s with another possibly destroyed while anti aircraft fire hindered the strikes. Ground forces targeted enemy dumps and positions as a night raid followed by a dawn assault on railroad yards and supply routes.
Durham Gov William Umstead’s condition was reported as improving rapidly by his personal physician Dr Ralph Fleming. The mild heart attack suffered Saturday night will require a short period of rest at Watts Hospital where he entered at 2 am Sunday.
