Paris code on wife beating mocked by Chicago judge
In Paris it is claimed a husband can spank a misbehaving wife under local law, but Judge William I. Morgan in Chicago's court of domestic relations rejects this. He says women are equals, not chattels, and any beating would invite legal redress. He suggests public whipping as a deterrent, but calls the idea impractical.
