Willie Echols of Kernersville raised a Berkshire pig that competed statewide winning prizes at Forsyth County and Greensboro fairs and earning $20 in prize money. The 7 month old pig weighed 300 pounds and the boy remains proud of his record and the breed.

Abernethy tannery fire they lose plant in Hickory
Abernethy tannery on the outskirts of Hickory near St. Pauls seminary was destroyed by fire Tuesday night with a total loss estimated at 5000 to 8000 dollars. The owner A S Abernethy reported no insurance and no plans to rebuild. Seventeen smallpox cases reported in Hickory Catawba county and a dirt farmers exchange visit from Rockingham county were noted.
