Four young North Carolinians died when two autos at a McColl crossing collided with a freight train. Police link racing after a roadside nightspot to the crash. Deceased are Johnny Beasley 21 Charles Sibbitt 21 Lacey Moody Jr 22 of Maxton and Elizabeth Norton 17 of Laurinburg. Atomic Peanut Produced by Radiation Milestone in Genetics
Dr Walton C Gregory of North Carolina State College produced a disease and wilt resistant peanut by exposing seeds to 18500 roentgens of radiation. The plants showed dwarfed to high yield variants before a desirable strain was selected at a Rocky Mount research site. The seeds and plants were not radioactive and the new seed will be offered to growers for limited planting next year.
