Mileage per gallon could rise with fuel economy gains
Detroit January 12. William S. James Fram Corp. engineering VP told the Society of Automotive Engineers that fuel economy could improve by about 15 percent if heat loss and combustion are improved. He cited carburetor metering and 10 to 25 percent losses from stop and go traffic. He also called for design changes, overdrives, lighter weight, smaller engines and higher compression to boost miles per gallon as gasoline costs remain a major motoring expense.
