The U S Army transport Joseph V Connolly carrying about 5000 empty caskets to bring war dead back from Europe was ablaze and abandoned nine hundred miles east of New York. Rescue of 44 sailors in lifeboats appeared imminent as the Morrison R Waite reported it ten miles away at 6 30 am EST. The fire started in the engine room and radio failure hindered exact assessment. The Connolly with a crew of 42 and an army officer passenger was adrift and out of control in the Atlantic. Coast guard and Radiomarine aided in coordinating rescue efforts. The Connolly last sailed from New York for Antwerp January 8 after returning 6248 World War 2 dead to New York on October 26.
