Judge Acts Stay Saves Winston Man From Death

Federal Judge Algernon Butler stayed the execution of Marion Crawford minutes before he was to die for the rape murder of an 8 year old girl in Winston-Salem. The stay followed a writ of habeas corpus filed after Crawford’s court appointed attorney withdrew and Floyd McKissick secured new counsel. The governor’s office had informed the prison director of the stay, and Gov. Terry Sanford declined to intervene. Crawford, a Spartanburg native, escaped from a South Carolina prison last July while serving a 20 year term for assault.

Assistance Program To Be Expanded In Raleigh
