The government reports December employment edged down 420000 with unemployment up 16000. Nonfarm jobs rose to 63.5 million while farm work fell to 4.1 million due to severe cold. Labor force growth in 1962 was about 600000 to 700000, below population-based expectations.
President Moise Tshombe tours the Katanga frontier amid a U.N. armored column shadowing his route to Elisabethville. Crowds cheer as Tshombe urges Katangan forces not to oppose the U.N. convoy and says he seeks to save his people from massacre.
A group of 16 Republican officials backs Walter Green of Burlington to succeed Robert L. Gavin as state GOP chairman. Gavin, who holds the post until the next state convention, cites finances for 1964 and a full-time executive office as goals before stepping down. Green previously ran in the 1962 GOP primary for Congress in the sixth district.
A second blaze in as many days prompted New York fire crews to raid a wall on the 31st floor of the Empire State Building to uncover and douse insulation fires. Officials linked it to insulation ignition from Wednesday’s fire and ordered removal of risky material. No evacuations or injuries reported.

SAN FRANCISCO AP Uncovered plot to free Roy Drake using forged court papers raised doubts over the security of penitent lives. Warden Olin Blackwell noted a 15 year term could have been set aside by fake orders, with forged letters to Drake, Blackwell, and a court clerk. The Justice Department confirmed an inquiry into the forgery while Drake’s criminal history includes bank holdups and escapes.
Gov. Terry Sanford said 1962 brought record growth across non-farm jobs, retail and wholesale activity, travel income above 900 million, rising bank debits by 15.5 percent, and new business and construction gains. He credited widespread efforts from Raleigh to Wilmington for the year.
In Kolwezi unrest deepens as Gen Norbert Marie and mercenary commander Jean Marie refuse talks and warn passes are useless. African troops, feared by whites and mercenaries, may trigger explosives at Union Miniere plants and Nzilo dam. Tshombe’s grip weakens as central authority falters and U.N. pressure mounts.
