North Carolina Supreme Court affirms Greensboro City Board of Education action assigning six Negro children to previously all white schools. Justice Rodman states a parent dissatisfied with a school’s operation should seek reassignment for their own child, not challenge others.
The North Carolina Supreme Court upheld a private Durham ice cream parlor’s segregated facilities, ruling the owner may select clientele on private property. Seven Durham Negroes who entered the white section and were charged with trespass were fined $25 and costs. the court found no error. Justice Rodman cited a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the 14th Amendment prohibits state action but does not shield discriminatory private conduct.
Senate leader Lyndon B. Johnson and House Speaker Sam Rayburn pressed President Eisenhower to back six blueprints for action to meet what they called a threat from Communist imperialism. They praised the speech but faulted the plan for not detailing immediate military buildup or concrete performance.
North Carolina 1958 license plate sales run slower than last year, possibly due to a new financial responsibility law requiring liability insurance. The State Supreme Court affirms the 1957 murder conviction of Julius Bunton 22 of Bennettsville S C for the killing of High Point taxi driver Clifford Witt Phillips. Bunton faces execution January 31 unless clemency is granted. Co-defendant John Kollock Jr 22 from Bennettsville was sentenced to life imprisonment after a mercy recommendation.

Clarence Griffin 53 longtime Forest City Courier editor died at his desk from a heart attack. He had just returned to work Jan 1 after October hospitalization and served Rutherford County in the 1933 1935 House terms. Griffin was historian for the North Carolina Press Assn. and a leader in regional history circles. Funeral delegates were named by Henry A. Dennis to attend.
